Earthing

Most mains appliances (especially those with a metal case) have an earth wire in addition to the live and neutral wires.
Inside the appliance, the earth wire is connected directly to the metal casing.
The other end of the earth wire goes through the cable and through your house into a rod in the ground.
Current can flow through the ground itself to the local substation, and then back to the power station.
